Podcast: Michael Shellenberger on Energy Poverty, Climate Alarmism, and Being a Professional Contrarian
As promised, today a bonus Drilled episode featuring an interview with Michael Shellenberger shortly after his book Apocalypse Never came out. In our conversation, Shellenberger emphasized multiple times the idea that the Global South should be allowed to embrace fossil fuels, fast fashion, and rapid industrialization, that climate alarmism is unhealthy, and that he is in fact a professional contrarian. Or as he put it: "I'm not really interested in writing about things where my opinion is the majority."
Currently, Shellenberger is running for governor of California. He's focused much of his public speaking and writing recently on building a mental healthcare system in the state, dealing with rampant homelessness and addiction, and improving the state's schools. But Shellenberger in the governor's mansion would mean some very specific things on climate. This conversation gives a small window into what those things are.
